What pool removal options in Adelaide actually involves

Full removal: the shell is broken up or lifted out and carted. South Australia's regulations take the demolition of the whole of a building out of the definition of development unless it is a heritage place or in a zone or overlay the Code identifies, and councils differ for pools. What drives the cost is the material carted, the access and the backfill.

Fill-in

Fill-in: the shell is broken down and left under compacted fill. Partial demolition is not in that exclusion, so ask your council about an application. What drives the cost is less carted away, plus fill and compaction and a possible application.

Choosing between them

Put the same job to the provider both ways and compare the quotes, the approval each needs and what a buyer will later be asked: the notice given to home buyers asks whether fill has been used on the site. The full removal page and the fill-in page set out each route.

Some owners ask about reusing the shell for something else. This site does not cover that route: we have not confirmed at a government source what approval it needs, so ask your council before you commit to it.

Pool Removal Options: Full Removal or Fill-In in Adelaide — common questions

Which route is cheaper?

Fill-in carts less material away, but it leaves part of the pool in the ground, may need an application as partial demolition, and a buyer's notice will later ask whether fill has been used. Compare quotes for both on the same job.

Which route is simpler to get approved?

Whole demolition is outside the definition of development unless it is a heritage place or in a zone or overlay the Code identifies, and councils word it differently for pools; partial demolition is not in the exclusion. Confirm with your council either way.

What does the provider need from me?

The pool type, the narrowest point of access from the street, and what you want the ground to be afterwards.
